The History of Newton North's CAPS Program
When did it all start?
The CAPS-Internship has been in existence since 1985. The CAPS-Research program started in 2008. Here's a look at at how we've grown.
2008
The Senior Year Scholars of 2008 were the pioneering cohort that heard the call and set out for intellectual glory. They set the bar high and produced a body of research that continues to inspire us all.
2011
In its fourth year, CAPS christened the new building and helped to polish the curriculum, refined the process, and advanced the use of technology. The faculty grew to three, the readers grew to twelve, the judges grew to 60+. We added expert readers and hybrid curriculum elements, such as discussion forums and threads.
2014
In our seventh year, we rotated the teaching staff and continued to refine the curriculum.

2009
Our second season in 2009, brought growth of the CAPS into two sections. We now had double the research and these students continued to amaze Newton North with their creative and intellectual prowess.
2012
In it’s fifth year, CAPS continued to innovate the program with tech tools like online proposal submission and online rubrics. This cohort helped shaped and establish some strong curricular foundations, as well.
In our eighth year, CAPS incorporated the use of Schoology into our curriculum for students to use for keeping track of deadlines and organizing discussions outside of the classroom.

2010In the third year, we had a large international collection of projects. This cohort established the innovative traditions of Web-based portfolios and brought the incomparable faculty Reading Team to life.
2013
2013 marked the creation of the new online site newtoncaps.org. The 2013 SYScholars embraced this new mechanism for unheralded collaboration and communication. 2013 was also the beginning of the new union – NEWTON CAPS – between the programs formerly known as syp and sparc.
2016
In our ninth year, we refined the Internship curriculum and our students had the opportunity to learn presentation skills from an expert in the field.
